Why every company should be actively involved with professional organizations
I am continually surprised by how infrequently corporations use the resources and networking that a professional organization provides. I am not talking about just becoming a member or attending an annual conference, but things like getting involved as a sponsor or hosting a networking mixer at your company's facility. This is a great way to meet prospective employees face-to-face in a relaxed atmosphere, and I do not see enough companies doing this on a regular basis.
Professional organizations are also a great place to advertise job openings and hire people with specialized skillsets. Further, many professional organizations are not-for-profit and can market your openings to members for a fraction of the cost of standard employment websites - Why aren't we leveraging this more? Companies can also talk with board leaders of professional organizations. Most, if not all, of them are volunteers, and they will be ecstatic to hear from you and will likely give you some great ideas on reaching out to potential employees.
Has your organization been involved with a professional organization? Have you tried any of the ideas above? If so, what has worked and what has not? Do you have any favorite organizations to work with?
